Q: What does the SPF in sunscreen really mean?
A: The SPF in sunscreen stands for Sun Protection Factor and is a measurement of how well your skin will be protected from UVB rays ranging from 1- 45+, better known as the contributor to sunburns, skin damage and even skin cancer. Sunscreen with SPF15 allows you to stay in the sun 15 times longer than without protection at all. The higher the SPF, the higher percentage of UVB rays you’re blocking.
I recommend a few things:
- Choose a sunscreen that protects against both UVA and UVB rays.
- At minimum, use SPF15 to ensure protection.
- Be sure to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours while exposing your skin to the sun.
- Always keep your eye out for new moles. Don’t forget I’m always happy to check any suspicious spotting or bumps that may appear.
