Sclerotherapy

What Is Sclerotherapy?

Also known as spider vein treatment, sclerotherapy at Cosmedic Dermatology is the treatment of spider veins which are stretched blood vessels with a pattern that resembles branches. These veins are typically found on the thighs and lower legs. Unfortunately, as time goes on they may continue to branch out and become more visible with age. However, with sclerotherapy patients are finally able to experience evenly toned spotless skin without covering up with clothes or makeup.

Who is a Candidate?

•A patient with visible veins on their legs with branchlike characteristics
•Patients who are embarrassed or self-conscious about the appearance of the veins and no longer wish to cover them up.
•Patients who are not currently pregnant and do not have a history of blood clots.

How it Works

Sclerotherapy involves the injection of a solution that causes the treated veins to shrink and blanch gradually making the visible discoloration disappear. There is little discomfort associated with the treatment, therefore, requiring little to no downtime. After the procedure, patients will want to follow the provider’s post-care instructions that may involve limiting sun exposure and wearing compression garments to increase the effectiveness of the treatment.

Post-Procedure & Side Effects

Sclerotherapy is a performed as an outpatient procedure and does not typically involve downtime. After the treatment, you will see a reduction in visible vessels by 50-70%. For best results, you may be asked to wear compression garments to keep the treated veins closed to prevent bruising. You may experience temporary redness or bruising but these side effects should subside over a couple of days to a week.

More than one treatment is recommended in order to ensure that all the veins have responded to the treatment. Unfortunately, spider veins are a progressive condition so new veins will form and become visible over time. With thorough initial treatments, patients should then only need treatments as needed.
