What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is a gentle skin resurfacing treatment that gently exfoliates the top layer of skin to get rid of dead skin cells and stimulate collagen growth to reveal fresher skin that glows. Once this layer is removed you will a see an improvement in acne, dry patches, and pigmentation as well as better products absorption.
Who is a Candidate?
The great thing about microdermabrasion is that it can provide improvement for many skin concerns making it suitable for many patients here at CosmedicDerm. Microdermabrasion is especially good for addressing the following concerns:
•Dull, Dry Skin – If your skin lacks radiance and you find that you aren’t getting the full benefit of your products a microdermabrasion treatment will remove the top layer revealing brighter skin that can absorb skincare products.
•Hyperpigmentation – Hyperpigmentation can be a result of sun damage or post acne scarring which can be difficult to treat with topical treatments alone. By removing the dead skin cells on the top layer you can begin to remove the damaged areas and stimulate your skin’s healing process.
•Congested Skin– If you often have clogged pores such as black and white heads Microdermabrasion can help cleanse those pores and allow any products medicated for acne get into the pores to better treat it.
How it works
During microdermabrasion, a handpiece is applied to the surface of the skin, resulting in a gentle abrasion or polishing process. Then the removed dead skin cells are then suctioned off and the patient is then left with a fresh layer. Following the treatment, your practitioner may either apply a chemical peel or mask depending on your needs and aesthetic goals. The treatment can take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour.
Downtime and Side Effects?
While Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive treatment, you may notice that the suction or abrasion could cause some mild swelling and redness if your skin is more sensitive in general. After applying a moisturizer with SPF, your skin should soon go back to normal. It’s safe to apply light makeup and go about your day.
